Spinal Tap II:  The End Continues

The iconic British rock band finds themselves once again grappling with the fickle finger of fame and the relentless march of time.

The project sees the return of its original stars: Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, known for his Emmy-nominated role as Chuck McGill in Better Call Saul; Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel,  Grammy Award Nominated for Best Comedy Album for his album “Back From the Dead.”; Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls,  who won a Primetime Emmy Award for his Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for The Simpsons (1989), and of course Director, Rob Reiner reprising his role as the documentarian, Marty DiBergi.

Still of Christopher Guest, Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Decades after their last calamitous tour, David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls are coaxed out of semi-retirement by a new, overly ambitious manager for a “legacy stream” global concert event and a concept album titled “Jazz Odyssey II: The Journey Home,” featuring avant-garde interpretations of their classic hits and new tracks exploring themes of aging and cryptocurrency. The ever-present documentary crew, once again led by a perpetually exasperated Marty DiBergi, chronicles their struggles.

Mishaps quickly ensue: Nigel’s custom-built 20-foot amplifier is repeatedly delivered to the wrong continent, Derek’s new album art, designed as a tasteful nod to Rodin, is mistaken for a grotesque garden gnome, and David finds his beloved vintage leather trousers have inexplicably shrunk to toddler size. Rehearsals are plagued by squabbles over tempos, Nigel’s insistence on adding a theremin solo to every track, and Derek’s increasingly elaborate, yet utterly impractical, stage costumes. And before it’s all over, their “global stream” audience peaks before technical glitches reduce it to a single, confused viewer in rural Kazakhstan.

Despite the chaos, the film ends with the band, ever resilient in their glorious delusion, promising “one last, final tour,” just as a new equally terrible idea for a concept album is floated.

The film itself, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, is once again directed by the legendary Rob Reiner, who not only originated the mockumentary format with the first film but also plays the on-screen documentarian, Marty DiBergi.  Reiner’s directorial work includes the historical drama Shock and Awe (2017), showcasing his continued prowess behind the camera.

New to the Spinal Tap world? …FYI:
No, Spinal Tap is not a “real band from the past,” but rather a fictional heavy metal band created for the original 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. The brilliant actors who play the band members—Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer—are all musicians themselves and have since performed “live” as Spinal Tap on tours which make them all the more believable and why so many people think they are an actual published band.
